Lunchconcert: SweetPotato

In history, poetry is consistently held in high regard in China. Traditional forms of Chinese poetry are rhymed and express its musicality in combination with the nature of the Chinese language. In some dynasties poems were written to the set rhythms of existing tunes, and even as opera librettos. In this concert Yuqi and Shuhang are presenting songs of ancient poems that are composed in modern days for classical singers.

Yuqi Han was born in China and graduated from Utrecht Conservatory where she studied with Dutch pianist Martyn van den Hoek between 2016 and 2018. She received a score of 10 for her master final concert. While living in the Netherlands she has been active both as a soloist and a chamber musician at various main venues in the Netherlands as well as in other countries of Europe. She is also the original member of the Florestan Ensemble.

Shuhang started to follow singing lessons at age 10 in China. She studied Chinese folk singing with Huizhu Li and classical singing with Li Liue. In recent years she took classical singing lessons from hHanny van Lankeren in Wageningen. Shuhang performs in the Netherlands since 2009. In 2013, together with other members in Wageningen, she formed the traditional Chinese ensemble SweetPotato. Shuhang is a PhD candidate of Wageningen University, specialised in plant breeding against insect resistance.

Initiated by SweetPotato, this concert belongs to the concert series "Ancient Chinese Poems in Songs", "Chinese Folk Songs" and "Artistic Songs of China". The musicians are passionate to bring authentic music from China to the Netherlands and the international environment.
