FACCE-JPI Science to Policy Debate
Science, the cornerstone of future European policies: Working for a strong European Research Area
Moderator: Leo Enright
The main objective of this session is to steer discussion on priority issues for national and European policy makers, international actors and to assess the policy priorities and research needs. A strong European Research Area (ERA) should be the backbone of the knowledge-based policymaking. The Commission set the ambition to create a single, borderless market for research, innovation and technology across the EU. The engagement of member states, the role of joint programming initiatives, and partnering in the context of national and European funds is crucial. The European policy priorities were set in the Commission’s proposal on European Green Deal. The proposal with Farm to Fork, Biodiversity and Forestry strategies, the Climate Act and Circular Economy Package will substantially influence the national policies. Some of the target indicators set by those policies are still to be confirmed and scientific breakthroughs are needed to solve sustainability questions like pesticide-free agriculture, or full recycling of bio-waste. In the international context, the ambition of Europe to become a frontrunner in achieving the sustainable future is supported. However, still lot to discuss with international partners about the European self-sufficiency and technological sovereignty in the context of sustainable European Food System.
